March is nearly over, but there are still a few games remaining in March madness. It’s one of my favorite times of the year – the college basketball final four. I always find it interesting to explore where the teams recruit their players from, and how successful those players are on the court. So, I put together an interactive dashboard using Tableau and embedded it below. The filters along the top will filter the map and all of the metric charts that are below the map. You can also filter the charts by selecting players on the map.

Responsive D3.js Charts

D3.js is an amazing javascript library that allows you to create beautiful charts and graphics from data from a variety of sources. I am in the process of shifting to using purely d3 for generating charts for this website, and one of the first obstacles that I had to overcome is making the charts where they would fit in the browser. Unfortunately, d3 charts will not be responsive even if the theme or framework that you are using is. The good news is that this is fairly simple to implement with just a little planning and a few lines of code.

The health benefits of consuming a diet that consists of the proper amount of fruit has been well documented. The USDA cites lower risk of heart disease and stroke, along with increased weight loss. The United States Centers for Disease Control has released a study that details the total daily fruit consumption by children and adults. What is the Best Day to Fly

One of the most annoying things about flying is when your flight is delayed. Just a few minutes can set off a chain reaction that could ruin your whole trip, especially if your trip involves multiple flights to reach your destination.

When first looking at the data from the Bureau of Transportation Statistics, you probably want to avoid the airport on Thursday and Friday. Those days have more instances of flight delays than any other day of the week. Friday topped the list with nearly 34,000 flight delays in December 2014. Thursday was a close second with 28,845 flight delays. However, after taking in to account the actual number of flights on each day, Tuesday is the evil one with half of its flights experiencing a delay. This is interesting because Tuesday is also the day with the least number of total flights.

Executions in the criminal justice system in the United States are thankfully on the decline. They reached a peak in 1999 when 98 people were put to death nationwide. By contrast, there were only 35 executions in the United States during 2014.
