March is nearly over, but there are still a few games remaining in March madness. It’s one of my favorite times of the year – the college basketball final four. I always find it interesting to explore where the teams recruit their players from, and how successful those players are on the court. So, I put together an interactive dashboard using Tableau and embedded it below. The filters along the top will filter the map and all of the metric charts that are below the map. You can also filter the charts by selecting players on the map.
The health benefits of consuming a diet that consists of the proper amount of fruit has been well documented. The USDA cites lower risk of heart disease and stroke, along with increased weight loss. The United States Centers for Disease Control has released a study that details the total daily fruit consumption by children and adults. I have taken the data and placed it into some easy to digest charts for your consumption below.
One of the most annoying things about flying is when your flight is delayed. Just a few minutes can set off a chain reaction that could ruin your whole trip, especially if your trip involves multiple flights to reach your destination.
When first looking at the data from the Bureau of Transportation Statistics, you probably want to avoid the airport on Thursday and Friday. Those days have more instances of flight delays than any other day of the week. Friday topped the list with nearly 34,000 flight delays in December 2014. Thursday was a close second with 28,845 flight delays. However, after taking in to account the actual number of flights on each day, Tuesday is the evil one with half of its flights experiencing a delay. This is interesting because Tuesday is also the day with the least number of total flights.
Executions in the criminal justice system in the United States are thankfully on the decline. They reached a peak in 1999 when 98 people were put to death nationwide. By contrast, there were only 35 executions in the United States during 2014.
I have put together an interactive Tableau Dashboard below so you can explore the data for yourself. The data is courtesy of the Death Penalty Information Center.

Database Trends and Applications is a magazine covering data and information management, big data, and data science. In addition, the website, dbta.com, connects visitors with white papers, webinars, and other learning opportunities in the field. The magazine and website deliver advanced trends analysis and case studies serving the IT and business stakeholders of complex data environments.
In accordance with DBTA’s constant search for truly unique and advanced IT products that are of high value to organizations trying to deal cost-effectively with Big Data issues, DBTA identified the Scientel Gensonix NoSQL DB as a trend-setting product in this global arena. Please read the full article here.
GENSONIX NoSQL DB incorporates the 7 major NewSQL features namely: Multi-Modeling, Document Stores, NSQL Language, SQL Queries (Tables), Transaction Processing, MPP on HPC and Never-Slow technology which altogether solves the various Big Data problems dealing with Volume, Velocity, Variety, Variability, and Veracity resulting in ultimate Value. These capabilities, which truly classify Gensonix as a Polymorphic DB, place Gensonix in its own class as an “ALL-in-One SQL”—an “All Data Management System” in the form of an ultra-flexible, NoSQL DBMS of perfectly general capabilities and application potentials. It can also function in concert with mainline SQL systems to efficiently handle both structured and unstructured data as a large data warehouse repository. GENSONIX can be configured to handle trillions of rows/transactions for billions of customers.
Business customers, Scientific, Government, and similar organizations can take advantage of Scientel’s capabilities in advanced Business Intelligence and Data Analytics to grow their business by handling Big Data more cost-effectively and with greater insights to remain competitive instead of being swamped by it. Scientel’s advanced IT, NoSQL DB, and general data-handling capabilities span the range from small to large in both the applications and organizational senses; i.e., from “small data” to “Big Data”, however these are defined for each IT environment. These are only some of the reasons DBTA magazine chose Scientel and Gensonix NoSQL DB as a trend-setting product of 2014.

Being part of the EMA stakeholder database has several advantages for PhUSE and PhUSE members. PhUSE is able to be identified by the EMA in relation to any issue under discussion by the EMA and for which interaction with the stakeholder is needed/sought after. PhUSE will receive information and potential invitations for participation in EMA conferences, workshops and other relevant to your organisation. PhUSE will receive timely information on EMA consultations in line with their areas of interest.
The adding of PhUSE to the EMA stakeholder database is another step for PhUSE to build up a collaborative framework with regulatory agencies and standard organizations. PhUSE closely collaborates with standard organisations, like CDISC, and regulatory agencies, like the FDA and the EMA, to create and share ideas around clinical data, statistical and reporting technologies. This fall, Dr.Fergus Sweeney (EMA) and Dr.Lilliam Rosario (OCS, CDER, FDA) gave keynote speeches at the PhUSE annual conference this year.
PhUSE, Share – Contribute – Advance, provides the industry with the premier platform for creating and sharing ideas, tools and standards around data, statistical and reporting technologies; PhUSE is a non-profit, volunteer-supported, community of professionals who are passionate about advancement of clinical data science. Since its inception, PhUSE has expanded from its roots as a conference for European Statistical Programmers, to a global platform for the discussion of topics encompassing the work of Data Managers, Biostatisticians, Statistical Programmers and clinical data scientists.
